Reconciliation Action Plan
Reflect
For more than 50 years, Y2 Architecture has been driven by a foundational commitment to community-centred design. Established in 1972, our practice has maintained a strong community focus from the beginning, anchored in the belief that architecture is a powerful tool for creating positive change. Today, we are one of Australia's largest dedicated specialist education and community infrastructure design teams.
"Enriching Communities Together" is more than our mission statement—it is how we have operated from the outset. We seek opportunities to make a meaningful difference through the built environment, working as problem solvers, negotiators, advocates, and dedicated partners with our clients, stakeholders, and communities. Our purpose naturally aligns with reconciliation principles, as both are fundamentally about creating spaces of belonging, respect, and opportunity.
Why implementing a RAP is important to us
Our decision to pursue a RAP is anchored in both principle and purpose. As outlined in our Director’s Statement, we believe reconciliation is fundamentally the right thing to do—a conviction that emerges from our deeply held commitment to genuine engagement with First Nations peoples and designing environments informed by Traditional Owners' knowledge and connection to Country. For Y2 Architecture, embarking on a RAP is about making a difference in the following key ways.
Voice and culture:
We will strengthen our practice by amplifying Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices in the built environment, engaging Traditional Owners and supporting First Nations artists.
Through meaningful partnerships and collaboration, we aim to design places that respect and connect to Country, reflect First Peoples’ knowledge, and celebrate cultural expression. This approach supports self-determination by increasing First Nations agency in shaping the spaces they inhabit.
Leading the way:
We will demonstrate our commitment to reconciliation through project outcomes and active advocacy within the built environment industry. By consistently applying culturally responsive design, we aim to set a clear benchmark, build client confidence, and align with social procurement goals.
Through client engagement, industry collaboration, and sharing project learnings, we will promote better practices and contribute to a broader shift in how architects and designers approach reconciliation.
Learning and awareness:
We will strengthen cultural understanding and capability within our team, clients, collaborators, and the communities our projects serve. Through targeted education and awareness initiatives, we aim to ensure every Y2 team member understands their role in reconciliation and can contribute to meaningful, lasting change.
Our project work will extend this impact by promoting awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories, and contemporary experiences among stakeholders, particularly young people who will shape Australia’s future.
