Centenary Theatre
Williamstown High School
Location: Yalukit-willam Country | Williamstown, Victoria Sector: Community | Education Completion: 2017
The Centenary Theatre is a celebration of the sense of pride and value that Williamstown High School places on the creative arts, providing a welcoming and iconic community-focused arts space for the school and Williamstown community.
Launched to mark the centenary of the school and to leave a legacy for future generations, the brief for this project was to create a Centre of Excellence for the Performing and Creative Arts.
Conceived as a community facility, community is at the heart of what makes the Centenary Theatre special as a project. Stakeholder engagement and benefit was at the core of this project from its initial conception and briefing, its funding model, its purpose and its ongoing use as a community theatre. Strategically located at the edge of the school campus, the design fosters meaningful connections with the broader Williamstown community and creates a welcoming and inclusive precinct for all.
The Centenary Theatre comprises a versatile 300-seat auditorium and a combined foyer/art gallery space, providing an intimate commercial theatre for local performance companies and community groups as well as a performance space for school productions, a practice space for drama and music classes, and an assembly space for year level cohorts. Shaping a nurturing learning environment, the theatre enables students to experience all aspects of performance and production, while the foyer gallery allows them to exhibit their artistic talents in a celebratory space designed to honour them.
The Centenary Theatre provides a high quality performance space and venue that brings the Williamstown community together to celebrate the arts and the talents of students.
