Y2 Architecture took an immersive approach from the outset, working closely with the Principal, staff, students and Parish throughout the design process to gain a deep understanding of their vision, values and educational aspirations, and to enable meaningful input and true ownership of the design outcome.

This process allowed us to uncover the school’s desire to deliver learning spaces that tell a story and to explore the nurturing interrelationship between the Parish and school, which was captured in the concept of lovingly raising a tree from a seedling.

Located on the most prominent corner of the campus, the new double height Learning Centre is a beacon for learning and community, providing a welcoming environment for the school community and showcasing the learning within.

The design nurtures student learning through a vast array of spaces; large or small, intimate, open or hidden spaces. Sliding glass doors and flexible furniture allows learners to move around and adapt the environment to suit their needs and supports a seamless transition between team teaching and independent sessions.

Wondrous treehouses set within the double height volume and accessible from all learning studios provide a physical embodiment of the school/Parish’s intent. The Treehouse supports students with an array of independent and small group spaces designed to nurture their development. Students can engage with the treehouses from any learning studio, with access to ‘the roots’ on the ground floor and ‘treehouse’ on the first, creating a range of small spaces that engage with students at different levels.

With light dancing through coloured glass and vast natural light, the learning spaces are safe, playful, uplifting and engaging, truly embodying the spirit of St Michael’s.
