The building has external access at two levels, utilising the sites steepness. A double height atrium spine runs through the buildings heart and draws light into the deep floor plan. The east wing accommodates the specialist science facilities with 2 chemistry labs, 1 biology lab and 1 physics/theory space. Each is flexible and multi-functional complemented by a shared science prep room and chemical storage. There is also a break-out meeting room adjacent to the theory space for isolated group discussion. The ground floor houses the main entry and connects both the east and west wings. It is made up of varied small, medium and large flexible spaces that allow for dynamic group activities with flexibility of movable walls and furniture. Large span structure via a timber truss system and consistent grid layout allows for future layout modifications. All spaces are highly visible for maximum passive supervision and for sharing best practice teaching methods. Acoustics is provided through wall and ceiling treatments, soft furniture, carpets, hanging acoustic baffles and mobile joinery units. The building provides students and staff with general learning facilities orientated at creating a sense of community. There are 2 large learning studios equivalent to the size of 7 GPLA’s with movable walls and flexible furniture which can be utilized to create make-shift break out spaces for varying teaching and learning scenarios. Entwined in the circulation space between these 2 large areas are communal, flexible break out spaces such as the Incubator, Group Meeting, Think Tank, Open Collaboration, Meeting Rooms and the Kitchen. Each space welcomes groups of students to gather for group or individual work and facilitates student collaboration. The first floor of the west wing provides another large learning studio similar to the ground floor, and also houses the 60 seat lecture theatre. The project emerged when 7 educational providers came together pooling their resources to create a major training facility centred on improving learning outcomes for the community. As the regional centre Charlton was the logical host for the NCTTC and this agricultural township has formed an ideal setting for an engaged program of learning. The facility enhances a well used community space and gives occupants a practical approach to their training, embedded in community interactions that build relationships, networks and skills. Arriving into Charlton you observe the Silo Complex that appears to rise out of the landscape. Symbolically these Silos are the caretakers of the town’s life blood housing the grain stores of the community. The NCTTC is connected to the legacy of the Silo with its language of resilience and community prosperity in both its function and form. The physical connection is observed in its most literal sense at the South Eastern end of the building where its curvaceous yellow elements form a silo end piece to the facility. Where the traditional silos are containers of grain, the NCTTC silos are containers of sound, protecting and shielding the occupants and the community. The Silo Complex has evolved over time with a seemingly random array of buildings and rooftop additions built as needed. These practical solutions can be seen as a metaphor of the can do spirit of the community. Jutting out of the roofline of NCTTC is an array of bright yellow pop up structures that pull out of the mass of the building. These Penthouses disrupt and break down the clean lines of the building in an apparently eclectic manner that is based on practical layout. A community reference team [CRT] was set up to assist in the formulation the requirements for the two sites and the final master plan proposal. The CRT comprised of representatives from the City of Ballarat, Ballarat Health Services, Department of Human Services, Child and Family Services and the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development. Stage one of the five stage educational facility in the amount of $10 million is planned to commence on site later in 2012. The Aspire Foundation Redevelopment project aims to respond to regional challenges and opportunities and to meet the needs of its community and Bendigo city’s tourism audience. Situated on the corner of High Street and Short Street, at the foot of the Bendigo Cathedral Precinct, is a single story industrial brick building (a former Haymes Paint shop) and a small brick parish hall building with a feature slate roof. Following the project objectives, the former Haymes Paint shop will be refurbished as an interpretive centre to accommodate multiple programmes including; an immersive theatre, a multi-faith and Bendigo History exhibition space and a library and learning centre. The existing parish hall will be refurbished as a multi-purpose function centre. Due to the challenge of existing topography, and the difference in level (approx. 5.5m) between the two existing buildings, a contemporary style extension is proposed to facilitate their connectivity. This approach will see Marist College in Maiden Gully utilise the right water for the job by introducing on-site water collection, storage and treatment. A wetlands eco-system will be created and rainwater from buildings will be captured to flush toilets and keep gardens and grounds green. An on-site sewage treatment facility will also be built to keep community ovals green, and rainwater garden swales will purify polluted water from car parks and roadways to keep our waterways clean and healthy. Our response to the project brief provides a small sterile operating room for minor surgical procedures, including scrub, clean linen store, as well as segregated male and female recovery areas; clean utility room for the storage of clean supplies and medicinal drugs; a dirty utility room for the cleaning and disposal of waste and soiled supplies; facilities for medical consultation, nursing care, and the provision of information on wellbeing topics; segregated male and female facilities for washing, changing and toileting; a small pantry / kitchen facility; and integrated energy and clean water systems. Our design is based on a 3.2m x 3.2m module, which forms a “Kit of Part’s of functional zones and areas that can be networked to generate small healthcare facilities or large transportable campuses. A simple steel portal frame structure, utilising square hollow section steel provides strength and durability, whilst integrated services would run through the hollows of the steel elements.
