VSBA, Charlton College
Location: Dja Dja Wurrung Country | Charlton, Victoria Sector: Education Completion: 2021 Development Cost: $5M
From its inception, community engagement has been central to the North Central Trade Training Centre (NCTTC). Seven educational providers established a major training facility to enhance regional learning outcomes.
Charlton’s central location made it the logical host, offering an ideal setting for engaged learning. This project enriches a community space, providing practical training that fosters relationships, networks, and skills.
The primary beneficiaries of the NCTTC are the students, who gain access to state-of-the-art facilities and innovative learning environments. Designed to educate and engage the next generation, the NCTTC offers practical, hands-on experiences crucial for developing workforce skills. By connecting theory with practice, the Centre prepares students for real-world challenges, enhancing their employability and career prospects.
Our consultation with Registered Trade Organisations was vital for program success. Input from the North Central Local Learning and Employment Network and regional businesses guided skills development. Y2 Architecture collaborated closely with the Project Control Group to optimise equipment layout, ensuring efficient use of space and resources. We facilitated staff engagement by showcasing similar facilities.
Key discussions with the Shire Health Department aimed to expand hospitality and beauty spaces beyond teaching areas, turning them into community assets providing real-world experience in service industries. Connecting the NCTTC to the existing gym foyer optimised community use. Positioning the centre at the front of the host school created a strong street presence and a contemporary facade that welcomes all students. Coordination between schools and transport authorities ensured facility accessibility.
The centre is designed to operate outside traditional school hours, encouraging community group use. The design draws inspiration from the region’s history, referencing the local community to meet future requirements. Tools and learning approaches help students achieve their goals, fostering links with local industry. Students receive a high-quality education and become integral members of their community, ready to contribute to its growth and development.
